The traditional plywood sheet is 4 x 8 feet, 48" x 96", which PS 1 gives in metric as 1220 x 2440 mm. Sheathing marked "sized for spacing" can be made a little under that, and some makers list theirs smaller, such as Georgia-Pacific's Plytanium at 47-7/8" x 95-7/8".
What PS 1 allows
PS 1 writes its grade rules for 48" x 96" panels and scales them for other sizes. A panel can be up to 1/16" under the length and width its maker states, and no larger. On a panel marked sized for spacing, the allowance is 1/8".
| Panel | Tolerance | Smallest (in) | Smallest (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | +0, -1/16" | 47-15/16" x 95-15/16" | 1217.6 x 2436.8 |
| Marked sized for spacing | +0, -1/8" | 47-7/8" x 95-7/8" | 1216.0 x 2435.2 |
mm = inches x 25.4, to 0.1 mm. The tolerance applies to the length and width the maker states.
What makers list
Georgia-Pacific's Plytanium rated sheathing, square edge, is listed at 3'-11 7/8" x 7'-11 7/8" (47-7/8" x 95-7/8"), sized for 4' x 8', with a length and width tolerance of +0, -1/16". Boise Cascade lists its plywood sheathing as 4' x 8' nominal, sized for 1/8" spacing, and Weyerhaeuser's southern yellow pine panels are all 4' x 8'. Measure the sheet before laying out cuts that need a full 48" or 96".
Sized for spacing
The SIZED FOR SPACING note often appears on APA's trademarks for Rated Sheathing, Rated Sturd-I-Floor and Performance Rated Siding. It means the maker made the panel slightly smaller than the traditional 48" x 96", to allow for the installation spacing the industry recommends.
Longer sheets
Roseburg's AB Marine plywood comes 4' wide in 8' and 10' lengths.
